If you are flying on Southwest Airlines this month be sure and pick up a copy of the latest issue of Spirit Magazine. The issue features a 24-page article on Midland & Odessa.
"We selected Midland and Odessa as a result of common misconceptions associated with the state," explains Carsten Morgan, director of Special Projects for Pace Airline Media, which publishes the magazine. "The reality of economic development initiatives and the diversity of the industrial/commercial sector are far more interesting than the perception. This is an untold story that truly is enlightening to our affluent and influential audience," Morgan said.
The magazine reaches about 3.2 million affluent business and leisure travelers who use the airline to travel to more than 65 cities, 33 states and 3,400 flights a day.

Attraction of the Month:
Sibley Nature Center
The Sibley Nature Center celebrates the southern Llano Estacado and the region surrounding it within 150 miles. Through programs given at its site of 49 acres in Hogan Park in Midland, Texas, and at schools, meeting rooms, ranches, and personal homes through out the region, the Sibley Nature Center seeks to encourage the region's citizens to be knowledgeable about the flora, fauna, and history of the region. The Sibley Nature Center is first and foremost a place for people to walk and to observe our native landscape. We teach people about our home, the Llano Estacado region of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. We encourage people to become knowledgeable about the region's plants, animals, and history. Knowledge of one's home leads to the love of one's home - and love of one's home is the most basic building block of patriotism. The Llano Estacado has a very harsh environment. We endure temperatures ranging from 116F to -20F, and sometimes have straight-line winds over 70 miles an hour as well as tornadoes. In some years we receive less than 6 inches of rain, while once every 40 years we receive over 30 inches of rain. The stories of adaptation by plants, animals, and humans to these incredible extremes are utterly fascinating.

Old Rankin Highway Visitors Center
Something that started out as someone's dream came to pass 2 years ago when Old Rankin Highway Visitors Center opened its doors on January 10, 2008.
In that time there have been close to 7,000 visitors from all over the United States of America and around the world. People from every state in the US have visited and learned things about Midland as well as 38 other countries. Many stop for information about Midland as well as surrounding areas. Some of them are interested in Midland's history and how it was established. They want to know about the oil industry, what those black things are (pump jacks), why some are going up and down and why some are not. Many people don't know anything about oil other than the gas in their cars came from it. They want to know how the oil is brought up out of the ground and then how it gets to the refineries.
Many also stop to see the George W. Bush Childhood Home and some of them think George Bush still lives here and they want to see his ranch. Others have time and just want to stop and visit our community and visit all of our museums and find good food. In the last few months we have had people stop by almost every week because they are moving here. Visitors are coming from all over. California seems to be one of the main states people are moving here from.
When our visitors come in they are greeted by one of our wonderful volunteers. These volunteers have given over 4,500 hours of their time just to share Midland with others. These volunteers come from all walks of life and have had some very exciting lives themselves and sometimes we get to hear about some of their really exciting experiences they have had in their lifetimes. The volunteers are such a great asset to the visitor's center and to our community.
Be sure and stop by the Visitor Center next time you're in Midland!
